Revolvers of this model were manufactured from 1852. Sailors of the Frigate Mississippi were the first to be equipped with these revolvers.
Though the revolver was a primary sidearm mostly for the Federal Navy officers, the Confederates also used it during the American Civil War (1861 — 1865). The Colt Armory supplied 7151 revolvers to the Federal Navy Forces during the early part of the war. A total of 215 348 revolvers of this model were manufactured at the Gartford Armory until 1873.
Apart from the American Armory, Colt Navy Revolvers were manufactured at the London subsidiary, England, where a total of 42 000 revolvers were manufactured.
During the Crimean War (1853 — 1856) Colt presented a rich in ornament revolver of this model to Napoleon III (Emperor of the French) who was one of the leaders of the anti-Russian coalition. In 1855 Colt made efforts through Thomas H. Seymour (U.S. Ambassador to Russia at that time) in getting the Russian Government interested in buying his revolvers. However, he failed to be contracted by the Russian Government. At the same time, a small number of high-quality replicas of Colt black powder revolvers were privately manufactured in Tula, Russia.
