The MP38 submachine gun was adopted by the Nazi army in the summer of 1938. By the beginning of World War II (1939 – 1945), only 8 772 units of this model were in service with the Wehrmacht, but by the end of the war, 760 000 MP38 and MP40 (a modification of the MP38) guns had been produced. Among the famous owners of this weapon was SS Obersturmbannführer (Lt. Col.) Otto Skorzeny, whose specialty was daring commando-style guerrilla raids.
