This model was invented by American Brigadier General John Taliaferro Thompson. Its rate of fire equaled 1000 rounds per minute. The most popular model, M1928 A1, appeared in 1928 and was widely used in the US and British armies, as well as supplied to the USSR under the American Lend-Lease Act (1941) during World War II.
The miniature model is equipped with a drum-type magazine.
