The DP-27 was adopted by the Red Army in 1927 as the main infantry machine gun. Soon aircraft (DA) and tank-based (DT) versions were developed on the basis of the initial model. The machine guns proved to be effective and reliable during the Great Patriotic War (1941 – 1945). In 1944, the original DP-27 was modernized into the DPM model.
