The Shpagin (PPSh-41) was the most common submachine gun during World War II. More than 5 million units were produced. It used magazines of different capacities: drum magazines for 71 rounds and stick magazines for 35 pistol rounds (7.62×25) in a stick. It entered service on December 26, 1940, and was put into serial production in August-September 1941. Shpagin submachine guns were first fielded into combat in December 1941, when the Red Army launched a counter-offensive near Moscow.
