The DP-27 was introduced as primary hand-held infantry machine gun into service with the Red Army in 1927. Shortly after that, an aircraft (DA) and tank (DT) were designed on the basis of the original model.
The machine gun proved itself worth as effective and reliable weapon during the Great Patriotic War (1941 — 1945). It was upgraded into the DPM version in 1944.
