It was produced for standard issue to all Soviet infantry during the Great Patriotic War (1941 — 1945) . A total of 14 million rifles
were manufactured between 1942 and 1944 (until the production was discontinued).
A sniper version for the Red Army entered production in 1931 and was equipped with 4x PE scopes which were replaced by smaller, simpler, and easier-to-produce
3.5x PU scopes during the Great Patriotic War.
To be made silent & flameless, some rifles were equipped with a silencer designed by Mitin brothers in 1927. Cartridges with reduced charge and
bullet subsonic velocity were used for shooting with this device mounted. The device, also known as the “Bramit (Bratya Mitiny — Mitin brothers), was not
used extensively due to its short life.
