These models were invented by American brigadier general John Taliaferro Thompson. Drum magazines (50 and 100 cartridge drums) (invented by Paine) 45АСР (11.43mm) were initially in use. The rate of fire was 1000 rds/min .
The first versions of the submachine gun were nicknamed the “Annihilator and extensively used both by law enforcement officers and criminals in the 1920s and 19З0s (not more than 15 pieces were manufactured in the period between 1921 and 1939).
Different modifications of Thompson submachine guns were introduced into service with the U.S. Army, British Army, and French Army during the WW II.
A total of more than 100 thousand pieces were also supplied to the USSR under the U.S. Lend-Lease Act (1941).
Approximately a total of 1.5 million pieces of different modifications were manufactured. The production cost of the first versions of Thompson 45АСР was $209 against some $45 of the latest versions.
This weapon was extensively used during gangster wars, e.g., Al Capone preferred this weapon to other makes. Thompson submachine guns were used on the St Valentine’s Day Massacre (February 14, 1929 ), when the U.S. most notorious gangster shootout took place.
